Having Oral Surgery? Here’s How to Ensure a Speedy Recovery

Oral Surgery Romeoville

Whether you’re having a tooth extraction or you’re getting dental implants, there are a few basic things you can always do to take care of your surgical site. To ensure that your mouth heals quickly and without complications, be sure to follow these eight easy steps!

1. Get plenty of rest.

After oral surgery, it is important that you take it easy for at least the first 24 hours. You can take up normal activities after your first day of rest, but avoid doing any strenuous physical activity or exercise for the first week.

2. Stick to soft foods.

In order to protect your surgical site, you’ll want to avoid crunchy or chewy foods during the healing process. Stick to soft or liquid foods like yogurt and soup. Just make sure not to eat foods that are too hot as this could irritate the site.

3. Avoid tobacco products and alcohol.

Alcohol and tobacco products can inhibit your healing process and make you more susceptible to infection. Therefore, it is highly recommended that you don’t drink or smoke for at least a week following oral surgery.

4. Stay hydrated.

You will want to drink plenty of water while your surgical site is healing. That said, make sure you don’t use a straw, as this can dislodge the blood clot and lead to a painful condition known as dry socket. You will also want to avoid drinking hot, carbonated, and caffeinated beverages for at least 24 hours after your operation.

5. Apply ice.

Placing a cold compress onto your face periodically for the first 1-2 days after your surgery can significantly help your healing. Applying ice can minimize your discomfort, as well as your bruising and swelling.

6. Maintain good oral hygiene habits.

A solid dental hygiene routine can help to prevent you from getting an infection after your operation. Be certain to follow your dentist’s instructions carefully regarding your individual case. In most instances, it is perfectly okay to brush your teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush after your operation. Just be sure to avoid the surgical site. You’ll also want to gently rinse your mouth with a lukewarm saltwater mixture to keep the wound clean.

7. Take medication as directed.

You may be prescribed antibiotics to ward off infection after your procedure. In these instances, it is very important that you follow your dentist’s instructions carefully. You will also likely be able to manage your pain with just over-the-counte medications such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen. If your dentist prescribes stronger pain medication, make sure that you take them as directed.

8. Protect your surgical site.

For the first few hours after your surgery, it is important that you avoid eating, talking, and spitting. These actions can disturb your surgical site and inhibit the healing process.
